As your AC system rigorously works away every day to keep your home from being hot and humid, it’s easy to take it for granted and forget that the system needs servicing until there’s something clearly wrong with it. Here are eight reasons why you might need an air conditioner tune-up.
1. Warm Air
If warm air is being blown from the vent, it’s likely that you need an air conditioner tune-up. The reason for the hot air is likely an issue with restricted airflow that needs professional evaluation and maintenance.
2. Water Leaks
Condensation may be produced by air conditioning systems due to the refrigerant inside the AC. And, though it usually doesn’t enter the home, an old AC or one not serviced can cause leakage. This can cause damage, so it’s important to schedule an air conditioner tune-up as soon as possible.

3. Increase in Energy Bills
If your energy bills have increased even though you aren’t using more energy than usual, it’s one of the most obvious signs that the system needs an air conditioner tune-up. This usually happens when filters are clogged because the AC has to work much harder to put out the same amount of air, which uses more energy.

4. Poor Airflow
If your unit is struggling to pump out the same amount of air as it usually does, it probably means that there is some form of blockage, or possibly a broken motor. This can cause long-term damage that’s much worse than poor airflow.
5. Bad Smells
If there is a strange smell coming from the air conditioner, it’s a major telltale sign that an air conditioner tune-up is necessary. This could be caused by any number of issues. The smells of moisture and mold are most common, and if you don’t get an air conditioner tune-up, the microbes inside the AC will grow. Even worse, the bad smell will get stronger over time.
6. Excessive Humidity
No home with AC should ever have a humid environment. If your living space feels humid, it’s likely due to the AC not balancing humidity levels. The system will need recalibration and an air conditioner tune-up.
7. Rattling Noises
Though all air conditioners make noise, it is generally quiet. Harsh noises, such as rattling and buzzing sounds, are a clear warning sign. Of course, it may just be a loose part. Unfortunately, the sound won’t go away until it’s been taken care of.
8. It Hasn’t Been Serviced in Ages!
Finally, one of the biggest telltale signs that the system needs an air conditioner tune-up isn’t from any noises or strange activity, but from not having it serviced in a long time. Though not many people realize this, AC units should actually be serviced twice a year.
