Palo Alto
Palo Alto, home to approximately 70,000 residents, is a California city known as the “Birthplace of Silicon Valley.” What makes this city special is its commitment to community: Palo Alto features 36 parks, 39 playgrounds, 41 miles of walking and biking trails, five libraries, and five community and youth centers. In addition, Palo Alto also offers its own gas, electric, water, sewer, and storm drainage services at competitive rates. Recognized for its innovation and excellent city management, Palo Alto draws newcomers in with its fast-paced economy, jobs, universities, and upscale downtown.
Palo Alto has developed significantly since it was incorporated in 1894. It still retains many of the Spanish names that represent local heritage, former residents, and descriptive terms from the days of its development. One of the town’s most significant developments was Stanford University, built as a memorial to the only child of Leland and Jane Stanford who died of typhoid fever. The university has since become one of the nation’s leading research and teaching institutions. Preserving history is important to residents of Palo Alto, and in 1979 the City of Palo Alto’s Historic Preservation Program began. Four historic districts are still standing today, featuring buildings from as far back as 1893.
Located in the southeastern section of the San Francisco peninsula, Palo Alto shares its borders with Mountain View, Los Altos, Menlo Park, and Portola Valley. The city experiences warm, Mediterranean summers and moderately wet winters, though it doesn’t get much rain due to the neighboring Santa Cruz mountains. Visitors and residents alike are drawn to the city for its jobs, outdoor recreation, well-planned downtown, and of course Stanford University.
